The Menger Sponge is a gigantic, hand-built cobble 3D fractal. It is a recursive hollow cube, composed of other hollow cubes, down to the minimum minecraft resolution (1 block), yielding an m4 sponge. To understand the mathematics behind a menger sponge, see here.

A menger sponge can be built up in minecraft of 3x3x3 block units, which can be assembled to form 9x9x9 block units, then 27x27x27 block units etc. This sponge was limited at 81x81x81 blocks in size; the next step up would not have fitted within the sky height limit, and so could not have formed a cube.

Inverse menger sponge

A second menger sponge exists in Freedonia - specifically, an inverse sponge, located at Test1. It was created early in the history of MinecraftOnline, by inverting and demolishing a copy of the original menger sponge. The wool it was built from is entirely legitimate, although the original copy was moved using Cuboid back when this sort of thing was more acceptable. Test1 was never meant to be found by ordinary players, as it was considered to be a very remote location at that early stage in the server's life, so it was used to test all sorts of risky admin tools and techniques - this being one of them.
