The Mosasaur Mountains is a large mountain range that is located in the Great Lakes Province and within Dernal National Park. The build is an ongoing terraforming project by getplayerhead.sh?SiOtter&16.png SiOtter.

Build Information

The Mountains

  • Mount Tomato

Mount Tomato is the smallest of the Mosasaur Mountains, it is located near Kanal Town. This peak mountain has 2 peaks and is named after getplayerhead.sh?SlicedTomato&16.png SlicedTomato

  • Mosasaur Peak

Mount Mosasaur is the namesake of the mountain range. It’s 190m tall and is the tallest and largest mountain in the range with a Ridgeline that stretches to the border of the park with Kanal Town. The peak near Kanal Town is called "Claw Mountain" but is apart of Mosasaur Peaks landmass.

  • Dernal Mountain

Dernal Mountain is the namesake mountain for Dernal National Park, its 104m tall and is shaped like a spire. Dernal Mountain has a sub peak on its eastern side.

  • Kanal Mountain

Kanal Mountain is a glaciated mountain. It’s 90m but is over 150m long. It has the Crasher Glacier on the western side and the Kanal Glacier on its eastern side. The mountain is named after Kanal Town.

Glaciers

  • Crasher Glacier

The Crasher Glacier is the currently only built Glacier in the mountains. Its outflow goes into Dernal Lake. It is named after getplayerhead.sh?CarCrasher13&16.png CarCrasher13.

Rivers & Landforms

  • Rifty Canyon & River

The Rifty Canyon and River is named after Lake Rifty. The river flows from the base of Dernal Mountain through Overlook Lake, the Old Kanal Town Historic Site, Kanal Town and into Lake Kanal.

  • Kanal Valley

The Kanal Valley is the valley much of Kanal Town sits inside, its a U shaped valley made up of moraines and eroded stone foothills. Rifty Canyon and the Rifty River sit inside the Kanal Valley.

  • Dernal Valley

The Dernal Valley is a U shaped valley that is accessible via the north end of Kanal Town by the Dernal National Park visitor centre and Oak Dock-B. The Dernal Valley lies between Mount Tomato and Mosasaur Peak.

  • Shadow Rock

Shadow rock, named after getplayerhead.sh?ShadowAuraI&16.png ShadowAuraI is located at the foot of the Crasher Glacier, its a lateral moraine that’s been heavily eroded.

Scientific Information

Wildlife

The mountains are home to multiple species. The most prominent species by far though is the Sheep. These animals spawn high up on ridge lines and on ledges, if you see one feel free to say hi and take a photo of it!

Geological History

Once a large glacier covered much of the area known as the Great Lakes Province. The area now known as the Mosasaur Mountains was once one giant mountain named Mosasaur Ingens. This mountain had multiple glaciers which carved out Kanal lake & Valley, Dernal Lake & Valley, Kanal Bowl, Chilliwack valley, and the Chilliwack Desert.

Over the years the glaciers melted and eroded the mountain splitting it into multiple pieces. Remnants of these glaciers still remain but due to climate change and furnace emissions they’re slowly melting away. The remains of these glaciers have made moraines and U shaped valleys within the mountain range.

The mountains are eroded cobblestone peaks, the smooth stone got stripped away over years of rainfall exposing hard cores. These jagged peaks make up the core of the mountains, many of the climbing routes follow cirques, spines, and avalanche cutes in the range.

Climate

The mountains are primarily in a temperate rainforest. This rainforest causes heavy rains to soak the mountains eastern side during the winter, the western side is much dryer, especially nearby Chilliwack which is in a desert.

The average temperature range and precipitation are shown in the table below

Kanal Peak Weather Station Averages

Month Temperature precipitation
Janurary 0 690mm
February 1 330mm
March 4 110mm
April 8 90mm
May 14 50mm
June 19 10mm
July 23 3mm
August 24 0mm
September 17 9mm
October 10 85mm
November 3 195mm
December 0 1197mm

Construction

Past Construction

The mountains were a terraforming project started by getplayerhead.sh?SiOtter&16.png SiOtter in 2017(?). The first 2 mountains, Tomato and Dernal were completed in 2018. Work stalled on the unnamed third mountain until it was completed in 2020. In 2021 the third mountain now named Mosasaur Peak was extended with "grand ridge". Following Grand Ridges competition in 2022 getplayerhead.sh?SiOtter&16.png SiOtter took a few months break until 2023 when he would build Kanal Mountain, Shadow Rock, and the Crasher Glacier. Alongside this was the modification of the old blocky borders of his 2018 terraforming into a jagged coastline.

Future Plans

Future plans call for an additional 2 glaciers and 3 mountains built. These mountains will be made near Chilliwack and the glaciers made in the central area of the mountain range. Other plans include adding striation and fault lines to the prior made mountains in a tedious refurbishment process, ontop of that multiple mountains require extensive terraforming and vegetation needed as-well as the competition of the Chilliwack Desert. The earliest the build is expected to be "completed" by is January 2025.
