Historical Significance

Plate Armor was the first armor set to be added to Minecraft. It was used to test the original armor system. It gave no protection and looked similar to iron armor, with the exeption of a shorter chestplate. Not much else is known about it.

One of the strongest current theories is that Plate armor was derrived from Steel, an improved version of Iron that Notch intended to add to the game, but eventually scrapped.

Here's an exerpt from the Minecraft Wiki on Steel-

"Multiple references to steel were made early on in the game's development. Notch had stated that it could be made using coal and iron ore, and that it could be used for armor and weapons more powerful than iron. In-game, flint and steel is crafted using iron ingots, considering the lack of steel and the need of a “fire striker”, despite the name of the former."
