The Idea

In recent days of Freedonian history, with the creation of more and more Nether Portals every day, the ghast population is on the rise. As more people enter the nether and kill no ghasts, the population simply grows and grows and becomes so great that a single step on the netherrack results in a most painful and instant death.

Some would say that this is good, the nether should be dangerous! But why simply accept this change that has made the nether nearly impossible to traverse?

At one point in time a rookie player with no experience could walk into the nether for an hour at a time and see not 1 ghast, and when he/she did see the beast, there would be plenty of time to engage or flee. A group of adventurers could explore countless nether chunks with only the simplest armor on their backs and defend themselves against 1, 2, or rarely 3 ghasts. Currently the only people able to easily traverse the nether are those with maximum enchanted armor and weaponry, or those with the assistance of the divine.

However, there is now a solution.

The Tunnel

Every time someone creates a nether portal and enters it, they build a sort of base or fortress around their portal to protect themselves in the likely event a ghast would attack. The tunnel will connect to this structure and flow forth into the maze of netherrack and slowsand.

The tunnel is only for the purpose of navigating the endless terrain of the nether, not to make the entire nether safe. Players must leave the tunnel to build homes or collect materials. Hostile mobs such as Magma Cubes and Blazes can easily enter the tunnel at any time, forcing the player to engage them. The only hostility this tunnel helps defend against is an artillery sweep of ghasts. The player may not connect a home to this tunnel for easy access to farms or chests of any sort.

Not all portals will have a tunnel connected to them. Only major portals that recieve traffic on a daily basis, such as major warps or cities, will have a tunnel.

Each tunnel segment will only have 1 portal entry, and it will extend into the nether until it reaches a Nether Safehouse. These safehouses will be a pre-made basecamp for those wishing to fight the evils of the nether. Once the tunnel reaches its safehouse, no other tunnels will extend.

This Nether Tunnel is not to make the nether 100% safe, but it will make it bearable to just slightly match Pre-GhastPopulationExplosion levels.

Note

This tunnel does NOT mean you should just ignore ghasts. For the love of all that is holy in minecraft, kill those fat baby-scream freaks whenever you get the chance. If you do, the ghast population will reduce again, and we can all have some proper adventures again.
