What is Hunt the Wumpus?
Hunt the Wumpus is a game of skill, where with limited arrows you must discreetly stalk and then land one arrow on the Wumpus without being seen.
What is it not?
It is not a demonstration of brute force (a sky full of arrows) nor is it an attempt to kill your target. It is not even necessary to injure the target to complete the challenge.
What are the rules?
1. Your inventory should contain:
- a bow
- 4 arrows
- nothing else (this includes armour)
This rule is also a blessing since the Wumpus is dangerous and even if you make your escape from the immediate area you may not survive the successful completion of the challenge.
2. Make no mention of this game in chat as it will cheapen the challenge.
3. If you run out of arrows the game is over and you cannot play again for another 24 hours. Remember that patience is important.
4. Do not shoot your prey whilst it is in a dormant state (standing still and staring at the sky or ground). This state is known as 'gchecking'. It is also a demonstration of your lack of skill if you shoot a stationary target and is dire sportsmanship.
5. Fire only a single arrow at once and wait for the result - don't fire all 4 at once as this is not artful.
6. Shooting the Wumpus at spawn is fine [providing you match all other rules] - it will cause no damage, which is not necessary as simply landing the shot is the point of the exercise.
7. You must not be stood within 8 blocks of the target as this is point-blank range and requires no skill
8. If
- you stalk the Wumpus without being seen by the Wumpus
- land an arrow on the Wumpus while it is moving and not assisting another player (you will see a confirmation alert in the chat window)
- escape without being spotted
- match all other rules
then you should wait a short period before declaring "I shot the Wumpus" to your fellow Wumpus hunters (not in general chat).
9. If successful the 24-hour rule still applies - you may not hunt again until the next day
10. You may work together with other Wumpus hunters (TeamSpeak or body gestures but not general chat for communications), but only one should attempt a shot at once to avoid the game of skill becoming marred by the brute force of a hail of arrows from a number of players. Some polite sportsmanship between the hunters may be needed to achieve this.
Hints
Due to the danger of hunting the Wumpus, only one picture of the Wumpus exists.
The Wumpus is normally seen at spawn, walking around the visitor centre and general spawn area.
The area surrounding spawn is a dangerous place and other players may attack you - this is the danger of the hunting ground and adds to the thrill. You must stick to the rules and have nothing else in your inventory.
