Making a Town

So, after some effort, you've established yourself on MinecraftOnline. Congrats! You've stockpiled some resources, and after messing in the Nexus and browsing through the Warps, you've decided you want to make a town of your own. Well, you've come to the right place!

Planning

Before building any parts of your town, you should first think of a theme or a gimmick to set it apart from all the other towns players have built. Sticking to a theme helps give your town a sense of consistency and it also helps to keep your town from devolving into a clusterfuck (unless you're into that, of course). Try and be original and think of something novel and unique, the more creative you get the better!

Here are some factors you may want to consider while planning your town:

  • Will builds be pre made, or will players build their own houses?
  • What biome are you planning to build in?
  • How good of a builder are you? Will you need any help?
  • How big in scale will your builds be?
  • Are you starting this town with any other players?
  • Will you use plots or will players free build?
    • Try to be realistic here, you don't want to end up burnt out on a project too huge to complete!

It's highly recommended to test your ideas in a creative mode world before commiting to it fully, as along the way you might change your mind on certain aspects of your town.

Locating

When locating a place to build your town, you can use the online map to locate a place you think is suitable. Try to keep it a reasonable distance away from other builds (depends on the scale of your town), and try to place it near a road or some other infrastructure to make it easier for residents to come and go to your town.

It's better to place your world in newer chunks to avoid accidentally stumbling across someone's old build, and newer chunks also have the advantage of newer ores to mine.

Building

When building a town, you should first work to make pathways throughout your town. This will help avoid scope creep, and well thought out pathways will help residents easily go through your town and appreciate all the builds. During this stage, you might also want to specifically plan out where your builds will placed.

Before inviting people, you might want to consider some town rules. Town rules may include things like not stealing from other resident's chests, or not killing people within town bounds. Just be aware that the staff team only enforces server rules, which leaves you to enforce the rules you set down.

It is also extremely important to get some form of consent to modify other player's builds within the town so that you don't have to ask admin permission to remove other's player's builds, as this can get very tedious. Common forms of consent include signs and signed books, although be aware that you cannot alter previously agreed upon rules unless the player re-consents to the terms. More info is available on the Grief page.

Once you're finished revising your terms, there are many different ways to attract interest to your town. You could try advertising your town, or you could ask players to build on a plot (Please don't nag though).
