Rifts are points back in time, allowing you to see Freedonia as it was before. They consist of 3x3 regions (96x96 chunks) from a Lightonia backup which can be freely explored.

During a rift, the world is completely frozen, which includes mobs and redstone components. You cannot interact with either of the 2, or containers such as chests. It is impossible to take damage, and elytra rockets have permanent effect. Teleportation commands are still available if you've unlocked them in the Overworld, as well as /unstuck and /minecraft:time to set the time.

Rifts were originally created for the Temporal Rift event, and brought back as a paid feature on November 2025. They can be used in all 3 dimensions, and also allow you to visit past temp worlds.

Rifts are made possible by Lightonia, which is originally an admin-only tool, used to check past backups in case of grief.

Rift Points

Rift Points are the currency to create rifts. They can be bought at https://minecraftonline.com/support.html.

Buying a rift point gives you permanent access to /whodiedhere, which allows you to see past deaths at a certain place.

/rift

/rift is the command through which you can interact with rifts.

/rift points

Allows you to check your number of Rift Points.

/rift queue

Displays the current rift queue.

/rift queue enter

Puts you in the rift queue. Note that the rift queue is only updated every 10 minutes.

Note that if you do not use your spot in the rift queue, your rift point will be refunded and you will be kicked off the queue after 10 minutes.

/rift create

If you are in control of the rift queue, allows you to create a rift at your current location based on your /lightonia selection. Check its wiki page for more information on how to select a Lightonia backup.

This command will consume 1 rift point if it succeeds.

/rift extend

Extends the rift duration by an hour. Can only be used if the rift has at least 5 minutes and less than 1 hour left. Costs one rift point to use.

Note that rifts can only be extended to a limit of 5 hours.

/rift teleport

Teleports you to the current rift if you're the owner of it.

TL;DR: procedure to create a rift

  1. Buy a Rift Point at https://minecraftonline.com/support.html
  2. Run /rift queue enter
  3. When you are in control of the queue, select a Lightonia backup (see this article) and load it at your current location with /rift create.
  4. Run /rift teleport to teleport to the rift.

Trivia

What a Rift looks like from the outside
  • Rifts are set in "void worlds", which means that apart from the regions you loaded, everything else is void.
  • /nearestplace and /nearestwarp do work in rifts, although they aren't limited by date, so you may see modern things as results.
  • Also, the aformentioned commands will be wrong in case of a nether/end/temp map being loaded.
  • Rifts (as part of Lightonia) have a render distance of 8-9, unlike base MCO which has a render distance of 5-6.
