Dernal National Park is a large park with eroded cobblestone peaks that sits west of Kanal Town. The park hosts the Dernal Park Climbing Competition once every few months where brave souls face death as they climb up the mountains.

Park Information

Activities

Dernal National Park is one of the older national parks in Freedonia. It has one main entrance currently and can be accessed via the city of Kanal Town and the towns of Chilliwack and Annaheim. Though the two official entrances sit in Kanal Town. The mountains host a variety of climbing, hiking, and sightseeing. The park though is most famous for its climbing routes, specifically the route known as "The Monster" which is known to be one of Freedonia's most dangerous challenges.

Events

The park has been host to a couple of events since 2018. The most notable of these events is the annual Dernal Park Climbing Competition. These events are known to have high death counts and attract large crowds of onlookers. The first official event was won by getplayerhead.sh?Bartek_kx&16.png Bartek_kx.

Builds

  • Visitor Centre

The visitor centre contains all the needed information and a diorama of the mountains. It's accessible via the Kanal Town nexus and has a large glass roof. It also has exhibits on the construction of the mountains and information on the route setters and builders for the range.

  • Old Visitor Centre

In Old Kanal Town a visitor centre from 2018 still stands. It used to be the only way into the park and required a small fee to enter. It closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

  • East Ridge Cabin

A cabin that's located on the East Ridge of Mosasaur Peak, its the viewing platform and supply shack for climbers doing The Spine.

  • The Monster Prep Area

The Monsters prep area consists of the Dernal Park Funicular Railway, Viewing Platform, Rules, and beds + enderchests for players to lock their items away before taking on the challenging hike.

History

Player History

The mountains began life not as a park, but as a backdrop for renders of the newly founded Kanal Town. getplayerhead.sh?SiOtter&16.png SiOtter made mt Tomato originally in 2017 to spice up behind Kanal and to make sure nobody built nearby. He would get cobblestone from the Iron Reefs and from donations via getplayerhead.sh?mk59apr&16.png mk59apr. The mountains had a strict no climbing policy at this time and required donation to walk within the parks boundaries. Mt Dernal was the second mountain constructed, it took around 4 months to make. After Dernal's competition getplayerhead.sh?SiOtter&16.png SiOtter went on hiatus until beginning to build Mount Mosasaur in 2018. Mt Mosasaur was left unfinished after {[user|Siotter}}s ban though. This left the mountains unfinished for 2 years.

Mt Mosasaur began to have work done on it after SiOtter's unban in 2020. The work was slow due to Kanal Town lacking any meaningful farms. getplayerhead.sh?Krenath&16.png Krenath built a cobble farm in Kanal Town in 2020, this cobble farm helped speed up the building process. It took a while, but after what almost became 3 years Mount Mosasaur was finished. Mosasaur ridge was the last remaining part of phase 1, It was built 2021-2023.

Once the first phase of the park was finished getplayerhead.sh?SiOtter&16.png SiOtter began to make climbing routes along the mountains. These routes would provide a parkour challenge to anybody daring enough to try them out. getplayerhead.sh?Clomik&16.png Clomik was hired as the parks first route finder in June 2023 and made a double diamond plus climb called "The Monster". The climb was so difficult that a series of climbing competitions would be based around scaling it and another dangerous climb known as The Spine.

Phase 3 of the park began construction in July 2023 with the start of Mount Komodo as the parks 5th peak. Komodo mountain was completed September 2023. December 2023 it was decided to make a glacier and expand Mt. Mosasaur further to add some educational aspects to the park regarding climate change and glacial recession. On Dec 16th 2023 the third climbing competition was held, no winner was selected as nobody completed The Monster before the 41 minute time limit was up.

Natural History

If you want a more in depth look at the geology of the park go to the Mosasaur Mountains page.

Player-Built and Modified

Dernal National Park is made up of multiple eroded cobblestone peaks and shattered land-oceanic biomes. These biomes make up the park and its wildlife and geology.

The parks biomes can be split into categories, coastal rainforest and a rain-shadow desert. The Chilliwack Desert located on the western side of the park is formed by a rain shadow effect caused by Lake Kanal. Meanwhile, the opposite side of the park near Kanal Town sits in a temperate rainforest. The forest is named the Dernal Forest, after getplayerhead.sh?Dernal&16.png Dernal who first settled in it. Common animals to find on the Kanal Town side of the park are skeleton horses, cows, pigs, and chickens. Within the mountains the cooler temperature creates a breeding ground for Mountain Sheep which can be found on ridgelines. On the opposite side towards the Chilliwack Desert you can find Creepers, Rabbits, and Bats more commonly with the warmer temperatures and lessened humidity.

The park has evidence of previous Glaciation with the formation of the nearby Kanal Valley, Dernal Valley, and Kanal Town itself being built on a lateral moraine, terminal moraine, and above an old U-shaped valley. This glaciation carved the valley and mountains which sit at the end of it. The largest mountain and main one is Mount Mosasaur, all mountains surrounding it once were attached to it before glaciation.

Terrain Generation

Dernal park sits above "alpha terrain" which is quite common within the Spawn Continent. Common features of this terrain which are visible within the park are basins, jagged cliffs, and small eroded limestone-esc mountains. Due to multiple updates changing how biomes work the entire area is an Ocean Biome meaning that all mobs found within the park were either spawned in by players or are incredibly old.

This terrain generation is protected within the park, though it is subject to terraforming in certain areas to make way for the Dernal Mountain range.
