Newport Syndrome
This page is representative of a single player's point of view, and might not reflect official server policy or attitudes. |
This page goes over a slang/technical term used by various players in Freedonia. It also acts as a commentary regarding New Port and its style of city management & building. For more information on slang visit MinecraftOnline Slang.
Newport Syndrome is the condition of a large base, city, settlement, town, or village that is constructed on purpose for the appeal to look attractive on the Minecraft Online Map Viewer, but to be a un-obtimized, slow, bloated, and disappointing experience when in-game on location ( Milanesa's definition).
...or the critique of Newport for having immense unregulated skyscrapers ( SiOtter's definition).
Origins of Name / Etymology
Newport is a large city located on the South-West Borderlands region of Freedonia. Its grandeur is on showcase on the map viewer but walking in the city is laggy & full of clutter.
SiOtter's Definition
The name was first written in chat on February 08 2024 at 12:33 UTC by SiOtter when talking to HommusMan about Kanal Town building restrictions, especially with a statement not to build higher than y-level 110, stating Newport Syndrome:
SiOtter "dont block boat routes" SiOtter "or roads" HommusMan "ok" SiOtter "and keep your build below y:110" SiOtter "were trying to avoid newport syndrome" HommusMan "what happenbd to newport?" SiOtter "its nothing but build-height skyscrapers :l"
On February 09, 2024 at 6:12 UTC, speaking to AndroCubed, SiOtter expressed more on his restrictions for Kanal Town:
SiOtter "so two things SiOtter "three technically SiOtter "dont block roads or boat routes please SiOtter "and keep your build under y:110 SiOtter "were trying to avoid newport syndrome. so a staggared skyline is the goal
On February 21, 2024 at 11:13 EST, SiOtter emphasized more on the reasoning of him specifying the term when chatting with Aninternetuser55:
red_sporb "siotter" SiOtter "yeah?" red_sporb "why are builds that go above y:110 not allowed?" SiOtter "so that we dont develop newport syndrome red_sporb" red_sporb "lol" SiOtter "its so that the skyline is staggared" red_sporb "i get it then" SiOtter "I'll raise kanals build cap sometime" SiOtter "just not anytime soon"
Milanesa's Definition (Written by Milanesa)
On March 01, 2024 at 13:39 EST, I, Milanesa, remembered seeing "Newport Syndrome" before and decided to type it as a little shitpost for the moment, but then it hit me on trying to define this term. What I was trying to indicate here is how one can get addicted to looking at Newport through the map viewer but not ever experience the location when playing. I also noted on how constant massive contruction of projects lead to the only satisfying view through the map viewer.
Milanesa "Newport Syndrome at its best" orchunter88 "Newport syndrome?" Milanesa "Yes, Newport Syndrome" orchunter88 "Can you define "Newport Syndrome"?" Milanesa "Just Look at Newport." orchunter88 "I dont want to look, define the damn thing plz." Milanesa "Dickhead, LOOK AT NEWPORT!" orchunter88 "I wont" AdoreKitten "orch it mean someone is too addict while staring at newport" orchunter88 "I wont see same thing as you." AdoreKitten "i am not newport addict thou xD" orchunter88 "I thought it means place where too many builds are cramped together." AdoreKitten "tbh my next major project is rework newport xp farm but not rn" Milanesa "Newport Syndrome at its best, right there"
Then something happened here, I don't remember what I was thinking at the moment but it clicked in my head...
Catmuncher2 "I had a friend who had a mapart addiction akin to crack it was so bad" Milanesa "Newport Syndrome at its best, right there" orchunter88 "Still staring at newport map? You are dedicated!" orchunter88 "Adore is only one trying to define it and definition is someone addicted at staring at Newport map or something :D
"Staring at the Newport map...", that's what Newport Syndrome should be defined as!
Anyways there are two definitions but they give the same idea of grand ginormous projects that only look well very far far way and not at the place.
