the original page is Protecting Yourself From PVP

On the MinecraftOnline server PVP is a part of the online life. You do not need to be paranoid about it, but you should know how to protect yourself. This article gives you a few tips on how to do that.

Protecting yourself from pvp out on the field

<getplayerhead.sh?ryanpbny&16.png ryanpbny> u may want to practice the art of not giving a fuck
<getplayerhead.sh?Mrcrazysalad&16.png Mrcrazysalad> yes i know but i just think its a bit unfair

When you are out and about you should be able to defend yourself, or be ready to retreat when attacked unexpectedly. The tools, weapons, armour and materials that you worked so hard to collect, craft and enchant can be easily be taken when another player slays you, so here are your tactical and strategic options:

Strategies

A very good defence strategy is hiding. To avoid PvP while mining or building on your own keep your location to yourself. Don't announce where you are working in chat and do not reveal the location of your current construction project(s) in the wiki.

If you are worried about attack by specific other players pay attention to the "XXX Joined the server" messages in chat and log yourself out when they come online, after protecting your storage chests of course (more on this later).

As a general rule you should not invite other players to your home base (the one set by the /sethome command) and it is a good idea to only meet with players you don't know inside the protected area at Spawn.

The next strategy is, "Always be dressed for battle". Armour makes you harder to damage, giving you more time to type /home or /spawn to teleport away. In particular, favour fire protection as many killers use flaming swords for the extra burning damage they do. You should also have a weapon in your one of your hotkey slots ready to retaliate with.

Avoid high places in areas with a lot of activity as an effective attack is to simply push a victim off a ledge, then race down to the kill zone to collect all the dropped belongings before the player can return to pick them up. A cowardly thing to do, but not prevented bu the rules.

A very effective way avoid being a victim is to not be the predator. Revenge killings happen and grudges are held onto .. usually for long enough to enchant a set of "God Weapons" that will allow the one time victim to kick the ass of the one that killed and stole from them. Being nice to one another reduces the chances of violence occurring in general.

Tactics

It is permitted to use plugins that offer a hotkey function or a macro facility that make it possible to respond to attack with a single button press. Simple things like having /home typed for you can save your ass, and you can set up donor combat enhancing commands as well.

Speaking of the donor system .. when it did exist the higher levels of donation gave commands that would give a player travel and combat advantages. Donations can still be made or course, but they cannot give advantages to players anymore. Those who donated before the shutdown still have their donor powers, so be wary of combat with those with 4 or 5 stars before their name in chat, because their have advantages that late comers to the server cannot match.

Problem Areas

The area just outside the spawn protection can be a danger zone. A known PvP tactic is to lurk inside Spawn watching for players that leave the protection area and following them out to strike them down while they feel safe. It is then easy for the attacker to gather up their spilled loot and retreat back into the protected area as to avoid being killed themselves. Iit is easy to mitigate this risk by running, not walking, when you leave the Spawn area. Or to use the /warp command, Nexus, or the /home command to leave without exposing yourself.

After An Attack .. When You Lose

If you are killed ask immediately for your items to be returned ... many players will do so. It is otherwise quite hard to regain anything valuable that was taken by your killer. Hunting them down and killing them in return may be satisfying, but may not have the desired result. The stolen items may already have been stashed out of your reach, destroyed, or handed off to another player.

Nothing stops you from retaliating against your attacker repeatedly, so long as you do not descend to bullying. But if you go this way make sure you are properly equipped or you will just end up being killed again.

There is no point in appealing to staff to have your items returned, or even for protection from attack. It is server policy that staff not interfere in PvP issues .. and it can be that it is a moderator who has attacked you.

Protecting your house and chests from PVP

Wool placed over a chest

Chests are used to to store large quantities of items that will be stolen if you leave one unprotected. The best and most universal way to protect a chest is to place a block over them to prevent access. The best material for this is wool as there is a tradition that staff will respond immediately to grief on wool and will usually intercept the griefer before they are able to steal from you. You should not use transparent blocks (glass etc) to cover a chest as does not block access your chest. Staff will still respond, but possibly not in time to save your items.

You should also hide your chests to prevent people from even knowing where your chests are in the first place. Simply laying down a floor over chests in the ground or building a wall in front of them is a good start. Hiding them behind walls that are constructed as Craftbook doors makes it convenient to get to them. Remember to leave room on top of your chests, even the hidden ones, for blocks of wool.

A really good option for protecting your storage chests is to use the /LWC command, a server side protection plugin. It allows you to make a chest private, meaning you are the only player who can open it, or set a password on it so you can share with trusted friends.

To view the options for lwc, simply type /lwc in game chat, and the list will be printed. Or read the wiki page about it.

You should secure your home sealing it up so that other players cannot reach it by normal movement, after you do the /sethome command of course. This way you are the only one who can use the /home command to enter. It is worth bearing in mind that donors have commands such as /thru and /descend to pass through solid blocks, but there are limitations that allow one to set traps to prevent command access.

You can also use a variety of redstone powered traps and mechanisms operated by craftbook.

Using these methods will help to keep your home safe from thieves.
