Across the years, MCO has been updated through numerous versions of Minecraft, starting with the release of public multiplayer with Minecraft Alpha 1.0.15, going all the way up to its current version at Release 1.12.2. This page seeks to compile and document the various version changes the server has gone through across the years; as well as the additions they provided.
Alpha 1.0.15
- Minecraft Alpha 1.0.15 released - bringing with it, the first public release of survival multiplayer. MCO registered the same day.
Alpha 1.0.16
- Online authentication enabled, it became possible to run a safe public server.
Alpha 1.0.16_02
- /Tell added to MC, which would later become /Msg
Alpha 1.1.0
- Serverside inventory enabled, making it possible to enforce true survival without item spawning.
- Compass added to MC.
- Chests, signs and furnaces now work in multiplayer thanks to official MC bug patch.
Alpha 1.2.0 (Halloween Update)
- Biggest list of changes to date.
- Added the Nether, as well as related mobs and blocks. Due to technical issues, the Nether dimension was inaccessible for some time, resulting in the creation of Fake Nether as a temporary alternative for player resource harvesting.

Beta 1.2
- Meaglin releases a fork of hMod for compatibility
- Paintings now work on MCO
- Added new blocks such as Cake, Dispensers, Lapis Lazuli & Ore, Note Block, Sandstone, Spruce & Birch Logs/Leaves.
- New items such as Dyed Wool, Bones, Bonemeal, Coco Beans (unobtainable), Charcoal, Ink Sacs & Various Dyes.
- Added colored Sheep, as well as squids which are milkable in this version.
- Slimes re-added to Minecraft, a feature which had been removed from the game since before MCO's release.

- Meaglin releases a fork of hMod for compatibility.
- Wooden Slabs, which would later become Alpha Slabs; added to Minecraft. Other slab variants added as well.
- Added Beds and the Redstone Repeater

- 4 April 2011 - Server updated to Minecraft Beta 1.4 with Canary B4.

- Nether introduced to server, Fake Nether becomes obsolete.
- 'Lit Furnace' glitched block is now obtainable, these could later be redeemed by admins for server artifacts pre-1.2.2 update.
- Half doors, half beds, and shrubs are now obtainable
Beta 1.7.3
- 15 July 2011 - Server updated to Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 with Canary B8.
- Not to be confused with long-standing server version Release 1.7.10.

- 28 September 2011 - MCO upgrades to Beta 1.8.1. Celebrations!
- This marks the last update before MCO updated into release versions.
(Release) 1.0.1
- 5 December 2011 - Craftbook is updated to the latest Canary Crow build, and finally MCO updates to Release 1.0.1.
- 7 December 2011 - The border is permitted to expand with a new 9 km diameter area opening centered on the northern (formerly eastern) edge of the existing border; this is the first part of a three-stage expansion plan to introduce new 1.0 terrain features into Freedonia.

- 15 January 2012 - MinecraftOnline upgraded to 1.1, with Canary Crow 4.4.10, 2nd rebuild.
1.2.3
- MinecraftOnline updated to 1.2.3 with Canary Crow b4.6.10.
- World map converted to Anvil file format.
- World height raised to 256 from 128, and build rights over 128 restricted to players with over 100 hours in the game, or minimum reputation of 20, or minimum donation level iron.
- Several bugs are addressed and server updates to Canary's git release 9423810.
Custom Version
- The server keeps crashing, and is thus updated to a custom-built version, based on git commit 08d1c46, to work around it and provide debug information.

- 30 September 2012 - The crash bug in Canary is finally solved and server updates to 1.3.2 after an unusually long wait.
- Freedonia gets a border expansion in north-west direction.

- The server updates to 1.4.2, after Canary releases its update [Crow 5.3.11]

- 25 November 2012 - The server updates to 1.4.5, after Canary releases its update [Crow 5.4.11]

- 2 January 2013 - Server updates to 1.4.6.

- 1 February 2013 - Server updated to 1.4.7.
- Player heads now collectable via PVP thanks to new plugin.

- 18 March 2013 - The server updates to Minecraft 1.5, only five days after the release by Mojang.

- 30 March 2013 - Server updates to 1.5.1.
- 25 April 2013 - Freedonia's border gets expanded by 4 km to the north-west mainly. The old Nether is archived and the Nether is re-initialised to allow harvesting of quartz.
1.6.2
- 11 August 2013 - After a lengthy wait, server updates to 1.6.2.

- 4 October 2013 - Server updated to 1.6.4.
1.7.10
- 18 October 2014 - Server updated to 1.7.10 after a very long wait. MCO would not recieve anymore updates until 3 April 2021, over 6 years later.
1.12.2
- 3 April 2021 - Finally, after 6 years, 5 months and 15 days, MinecraftOnline is updated from 1.7.10 to 1.12.2! The server reached over 100 players, with the TPS going haywire; truly a chaotic day.
- 3 April 2021 - Ban count drops from ~41300 to ~38400 due to the ban system becoming UUID-based. The first ban in 1.12.2 was decoder10, who also ended up being the first unban as well.
- 3 April 2021 - Freedonia's End dimension is reset with the 1.12.2 update. The main island becomes a staff-governed area that is for dragon fighting and not building. The outer islands become free-build areas. Parts of the old End dimension are planned to be moved elsewhere in the new End.
- Items with invalid damage ID are now untextured.
Projected Updates
Sometime in the near future, MCO is expected to be updated to a version of 1.20.6, an update which would provide the biggest leap of content the server has seen to date.
