As of 1 November 2025, the server has been blacklisted twice and is currently threatened with being blacklisted a third time. The first was in August 2018 and was for the old pay-to-win kit system. The second was in October 2025. The current threat is due to the server's Free Speech policy.

Mojang Blacklist

In 2016, Mojang altered Minecraft's networking protocol to support a blacklist. When a client tries to connect to a server, it checks if that server is blacklisted. If so, it will fail to connect. Because this check is implemented in a library used by the client, this check is applied by all clients back to release 1.7.2. Mojang blacklists servers that they judge to have violated the Minecraft Usage Guidelines.

August 2018 Blacklist Incident

At 23:16 on 20 July 2018 (UTC) , Mojang emailed the server saying that it was breaking Mojang's Commercial Use Guidelines. Firstly, players could purchase items and kits that gave them advantages over other players, such as the /heal command. Secondly, these purchases were called donations. Thirdly, the server used Mojang's art in its branding. Mojang also said that servers should give purchasers a receipt or purchase history and make clear who to contact.

These issues were not resolved and Mojang blacklisted the server's main address, minecraftonline.com, on 9 August. However, they missed a redirect (mco.re) that the server had. Admins instructed players to connect with that instead on the main page. Mojang responded by keeping the server blacklisted instead instead of giving it more opportunity to address these issues. Mojang also asked the server to either change its name to not include 'Minecraft' or make explicit that the server is unofficial.

Ultimately, the server removed the ability to purchase items and kits, but let players kept their kits. The server also changed its branding to not use Mojang's art. The website was also updated with a prominent disclaimer that, "MinecraftOnline.com is not affiliated with Mojang AB."

Mojang removed the server from its blacklist on 20 August 2018. The server has sold purely cosmetic ranks since October 2019. Since August 2021, players can buy the original set of kits with /store. However, they can only buy them with tokens gotten by voting, for finding bugs and winning server events. Players who got these kits before then are marked has having a legacy kit on their user pages and when hovering over their name in chat.

2022 Branding Confusion

At 16:07 on 12 October 2022 (UTC) , Mojang emailed the admins to talk about the server's branding. The representative seemed to think that the server's logo was using Mojang's art. However they had already been altered. Upon closer inspection, the representative agreed that they were sufficiently different from Mojang's art, given the server's history. The matter was resolved the same day and server was not blacklisted. However, Mojang is apparently bad at keeping records on exchanges with servers and the representative said another person may talk about the matter again as a result.

Early October 2025 Blacklist Incident

Mojang's response to the admins requesting the server to be removed from the blacklist. They raised issues with the rank purchases and lack of clear contact information.

Between 03:00 - 04:00 on 7 October 2025 (UTC), the server was blacklisted again. Mojang did not contact the server before blacklisting it this time. When the admins emailed Mojang to be removed from the blacklist, Mojang said that the issues were that the server called rank purchases 'donations' and did not clearly present contact information. Server may sell cosmetics and accept donations. However, they may not give a 'donor' something that only they can use, as MinecraftOnline did. While getplayerhead.sh?SlowRiot&16.png SlowRiot can be contacted with mailto:admin@minecraftonline.com and the admin team as a whole can be contacted with mailto:admins@minecraftonline.com, this was not clearly stated on the website. Mojang removed the server from the blacklist around 02:00 the next day while the server addresses these issues.

October/November 2025 Blacklist Threat

At 14:29 on 29 October 2025 (UTC), Mojang emailed the server again. This time, they complained about vaguely-defined, "harmful and disruptive behaviour," ingame and on Discord. They also explicitly called out the server's longstanding Free Speech policy as an issue for suggesting "tolerance for harmful speech." They gave the server a week to respond before threatening a blacklist.

The admins asked Mojang for clarification and they said that issues with the server were:

  • "Unmoderated hate speech and harassment"
  • "Predatory behaviour and grooming risks"
  • "Explicit and violent content"
  • "Failure to act by admins"

Player Response

Players and staff alike have been uncomfortable with Mojang's cracking down on free speech and several have tried to bring awareness of the issue on various platforms, as shown in the table below. However, people who do not play on the server have often displayed hostility towards the server, claiming that it is toxic and staff team corrupt.
