This is a list of significant events and changes affecting the server and Freedonia throughout its lifetime.

Effectively, this page is intended as a comprehensive history of major server events and milestones. For other community events, see the Community Timeline.

Timeline

Minecraft 1.0.15 (the first release of SMP) in typical multiplayer form for the time; a treeless world with everything on fire.

2010

August

• 4 August 2010 - Minecraft Alpha 1.0.15 released - bringing with it, the first public release of survival multiplayer.
• 4 August 2010 - MinecraftOnline.com registered [1], and the server is created on Hemingway by  SlowRiot, who makes himself, and  RuneChan Admins. Runechan then creates Freedonia and approves it. The server then enters private testing.
• 6 August 2010 - LlamaCraft released, making it possible to disable fire and TNT - the first effective antigrief solution.
• 6 August 2010 - hMod released, making it possible to have Moderators as well as Admins.
• 6 August 2010 - MinecraftOnline opens to the public, running LlamaCraft and hMod.
• 7 August 2010 -  Flippeh,  Rizual and  whogotmynick are promoted to the server's first Moderator positions.
• 8 August 2010 -  Tommyx50 is promoted to Moderator.
• 9 August 2010 -  Minarr is promoted to Moderator.
• 12 August 2010 - Minecraft Alpha 1.0.16 released - online authentication enabled, so it becomes possible to run a safe public server.
• 13 August 2010 -  Flippeh is promoted to Admin.
• 13 August 2010 -  xeroremorse and  BoonTheMoon are promoted to Moderator.
• 15 August 2010 - IRC channel #minecraftonline created.  Flippeh is first to join: "Mhhh, the smell of a fresh IRC channel"
• 19 August 2010 -  Dokie_Okie and  Carnaugh are promoted to Moderator.
• 22 August 2010 -  Minarr is demoted to ordinary user following abuse of item spawning.
• 22 August 2010 -  Tinowyn is promoted to Moderator.

September

• 1 September 2010 -  Hellstar and  darkthief101 are promoted to Moderator.
• 2 September 2010 -  TBSliver is promoted to Moderator.
• 4 September 2010 - 1000th unique player connects to the server.
• 10 September 2010 - Minecraft Alpha 1.1.0 released - serverside inventory enabled, making it possible to enforce true survival without item spawning.
• 11 September 2010 -  bastetfurry is promoted to Moderator.
• 28 September 2010 -  Dommys is promoted to Moderator.
• 29 September 2010 -  nickcwly is promoted to Moderator.  darkthief101 is demoted to ordinary user following an incident of abuse of the Modstick.

October

• 2 October 2010 - Server's 100th ban (player  demon1227).
• 2 October 2010 -  XeroXer is promoted to Moderator.
• 10 October 2010 -  Arctos13 and  chivalrousWeasel are promoted to Moderator.
• 30 October 2010 - Minecraft updated to Alpha 1.2.0 (Halloween update), biggest list of changes to date. MCO kept back awaiting hMod update.

November

• 2 November 2010 - MCO updated to Alpha 1.2.0
• 6 November 2010 -  Tommyx50 is demoted to ordinary user.
• 7 November 2010 -  At0m1Ca15 is promoted to Moderator.
• 10 November 2010 -  ToneDial is promoted to Moderator.
• 18 November 2010 -  ampqre is promoted to Moderator.

2011

January

• 2 January 2011 - 10,000th unique player connects to the server.
• 13 January 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.2 released. Forces a client update, so MinecraftOnline is forced to switch to a temporary world until hMod is updated.
• 20 January 2011 - Meaglin releases a fork of hMod for Beta 1.2.
• 20 January 2011 -  bastetfurry is promoted to Admin.
• 25 January 2011 - Donation system begins development and private testing.
• 25 January 2011 - Donation system introduced to the public.

February

• 6 February 2011 -  shobble is promoted to Moderator.
• 10 February 2011 -  shobble is promoted to Admin.
• 11 February 2011 -  Acsidol is promoted to Moderator.
• 12 February 2011 - Server migrated from hemingway to revenant.
• 18 February 2011 - Minecon Feb '11 held in Edinburgh. Much booze is consumed, primarily by  SlowRiot.
• 20 February 2011 -  Tayron is promoted to Moderator.
• 22 February 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.3 released. Forces a client update, so MinecraftOnline is forced to switch to a temporary world until hMod is updated.
• 28 February 2011 - Meaglin releases a fork of hMod for Beta 1.3.

March

• ? March 2011 - Borderlands plugin was enabled and the first circular border of Freedonia was created with an 18 km diameter.
• 3 March 2011 -  ToneDial and  chivalrousWeasel are promoted to Admin.
• 3 March 2011 -  Causeless (formerly  Tommyx50) is promoted to Moderator for the second time.
• 7 March 2011 -  Pianoman,  BaygullATL and  SavageClown are all promoted to Moderator.
• 15 March 2011 - Server's 1000th ban was a  SlowRiot's logcheck ban of  Caposasso, who was unbanned few minutes later, and player  AlotaFagina was banned next by newly promoted  Pianoman.
• 16 March 2011 -  lacrosse1991 promoted to Moderator.
• 17 March 2011 -  jlawrence6809 and  shypixel are promoted to Moderator.
• 18 March 2011 -  TheMightyCheeze is promoted to Moderator.
• 26 March 2011 -  Krenath is promoted to Moderator.

April

• 1 April 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.4 update released. Server kept back awaiting Canary update.
• 1 April 2011 -  Zymes is promoted to Moderator. Everyone thinks it's an april fools' joke. It's not.
• 4 April 2011 - Server updated to Minecraft Beta 1.4 with Canary B4.
• 7 April 2011 - Facebook page created: http://facebook.com/MinecraftOnline
• 8 April 2011 - Server's 2000th ban: player  Yaominghu was banned by  chivalrousWeasel.
• 10 April 2011 - Previous long-held record for most bans in one day - 119 bans (superceded by 21 May 2011).
• 16 April 2011 - This wiki created.
• 17 April 2011 -  AgentMuu and  imaMINOR are promoted to Moderator.
• 18 April 2011 - 20,000th unique player connects to the server.
• 19 April 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.5 update released. Server kept back awaiting Canary update.
• 20 April 2011 - Server migrated from revenant to roppongi.
• 27 April 2011 - Server updated to Minecraft Beta 1.5 with Canary B5.
• 29 April 2011 -  SavageClown is demoted to ordinary user as it was felt he no longer represented the server appropriately.
• 30 April 2011 -  lacrosse1991 and  Krenath are promoted to Admins.

May

• 5 May 2011 -  Quizlibet is promoted to Moderator.
• 11 May 2011 - Server's 3000th ban: player  kidshango was banned by newly promoted  Quizlibet.
• 15 May 2011 - May Unrest.
• 18 May 2011 -  GodlyCheeze and  ModernMyth7 are promoted to Moderator.
• 20 May 2011 -  BadSyntax and  healthyuncle are promoted to Moderator.
• 21 May 2011 -  StanDudek and  Tank_AUT are promoted to Moderator.

• 22 May 2011 - Server's 4000th ban (player  deathrow626) made by  GodlyCheeze.
• 24 May 2011 -  Charlesbaechler and  Kiatarie are promoted to Moderator.
• 26 May 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.6 update released. Server kept back awaiting major bugfixes and Canary update.

The first expedition party enters the Nether portal.

June

• 4 June 2011 -  rtkwe and  zfleming1 are promoted to Moderator.
• 7 June 2011 - The Nothing.
• 15 June 2011 - Server updated to Minecraft Beta 1.6.6 with Canary crow-b1.2.7.
• 18 June 2011 - Nether enabled on the server for the first time, rendering the Fake Nether obsolete.
• 23 June 2011 - Server's 5000th ban (player  dipsy7777).
• 29 June 2011 - Due to a drunken Admin,  Lothendal and  dorn284 were promoted to Moderator.
• 30 June 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.7 released. Server kept back awaiting Canary update.

July

• 8 July 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 released, finally fixing most of the bugs of Beta 1.7.
• 15 July 2011 - Server updated to Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 with Canary B8.
• 24 July 2011 -  Machines_Are_Us is promoted to Moderator.

• 3 August 2011 - Server's 6000th ban (player  blane88).
• 4 August 2011 - Freedonia celebrates its first birthday with a Cake Party
• 5 August 2011 -  AndreyDio is promoted to Moderator by surprise.  shypixel is promoted to Admin.
• 8 August 2011 - 30,000th unique player connects to the server.
• 19 August 2011 -  Edessa,  Shintyx and  xxVegasxx are all promoted to Moderator.
• 22 August 2011 - 22/08 Downtime.
• 23 August 2011 - A second server configured for testing and auxiliary services, pururin, is brought online.

September

• 9 September 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.8 pre-released. Nothing happens.
• 10 September 2011 -  Drathus42 and  KingOfCheeseLand are promoted to Moderator.
• 13 September 2011 - Server's 7000th ban (player  pacmanbuum).
• 14 September 2011 - Minecraft Beta 1.8 officially released. Server kept back awaiting Canary update.
• 20 September 2011 -  ToneDial resigns his Admin position due to real-life commitments.
• 26 September 2011 -  AgentMuu,  Edessa and  guyed are promoted to Admin.
• 28 September 2011 - MCO upgrades to Beta 1.8.1. Celebrations!

October

• 17 October 2011 -  healthyuncle demoted due to behaviour unbecoming to a Moderator.

November

• 1 November 2011 -  Edessa is demoted from an Admin to a normal player.
• 4 November 2011 -  Tank_AUT demoted due to behaviour unbecoming to a Moderator.
• 6 November 2011 -  Shintyx is demoted from Moderator and banned from the server for grief.
• 7 November 2011 -  fmxstick and  nosefish are promoted to Moderator.
• 18 November 2011 -  werdnaz is promoted to Moderator. It is the official release day of Minecraft 1.0.0 and the end of beta status!

• 24 November 2011 -  Ellen124 and  FlyingJellyfish are promoted to Moderator, making today the first all-female group promotion.

• 5 December 2011 - Craftbook is updated to the latest Canary Crow build, and finally MCO updates to Release 1.0.1.
• 7 December 2011 - The border is permitted to expand with a new 9 km diameter area opening centered on the northern (formerly eastern) edge of the existing border; this is the first part of a three-stage expansion plan to introduce new 1.0 terrain features into Freedonia.
• 8 December 2011 - Server's 8000th ban (player  tom7300).

• 23 December 2011 -  Machines_Are_Us and  zfleming1 are promoted to Admin.
• 25 December 2011 -  broncoskip,  bubba_basti,  gardy64,  jimmyd93,  HeavyWeaponsOrk,  nodoka_miyazaki,  Palindrome7,  samoroth,  Thonykidd are all promoted to Moderator by surprise by Riot who may have had a drop to drink.
• 25 December 2011 -  Causeless resigns from Moderator position, partially due to  SlowRiot's modding spree. Sources suggest he is aware that his lack of performance would have removed him from the team at the next cull.
• 26 December 2011 -  The_Jackal_249 and  TheSuicideBooth are promoted to Moderator.
• 28 December 2011 -  Bigred999 is promoted to Moderator.
• 31 December 2011 -  Rayzion is promoted to Moderator.

January

• 3 January 2012 -  captbunzo is promoted to Moderator.
• 9 January 2012 - First experimental broadcast by MinecraftOnline Radio (MCOR).
• 10 January 2012 -  jimmyd93 is demoted to ordinary player as per his request, following The night of BHS minecraft shenanigans
• 10 January 2012 - MCOR given an experimental web front-end, http://minecraftonline.com/radio
• 12 January 2012 - Minecraft updated to 1.1. MinecraftOnline held back pending a Canary update.
• 15 January 2012 - MinecraftOnline upgraded to 1.1, with Canary Crow 4.4.10, 2nd rebuild.
• 17 January 2012 - The border is permitted to expand with a new 9 km diameter area opening centered on the eastern (formerly southern) edge of the existing main border.
• 17 January 2012 -  Enjoku is promoted to Moderator.
• 25 January 2012 -  gabzwithabz is promoted to Moderator.
• 25 January 2012 - To celebrate the anniversary of MCO's donation system opening to the public, the god kit is discounted by £500 (50%) for one day only.

February

• 14 February 2012 -  monk30lol Hosts a very interesting Valentines day party at Spawn.
• 15 February 2012 - Server's 9000th ban (player  123ajc123). It went over 9000 with  xDugzahh as a ban evasion account for  CackleFish.
• 21 February 2012 - The server's 40,000th unique player connects,  yakgrr. Party at Spawn with cake. And pigs.

March

• 01 March 2012 -  stromhurst is promoted to Moderator.
• 01 March 2012 - Minecraft updated to 1.2.1 and then 1.2.2. Server kept back as these versions prove very buggy.
• 02 March 2012 - Minecraft updated to 1.2.3. Server kept back awaiting a stable Canary update.
• 03 March 2012 - MinecraftOnlineFreedonia (MCOF) Steam group created: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/MinecraftOnlineSteam
• 09 March 2012 - MinecraftOnline updated to 1.2.3 with Canary Crow b4.6.10, world map converted to Anvil file format. World height raised to 256 from 128, and build rights over 128 restricted to players with over 100 hours in the game, or minimum reputation of 20, or minimum donation level iron (using the custom BuildRestriction plugin). Several bugs are addressed and server updates to Canary's git release 9423810. The server keeps crashing, and is thus updated to a custom-built version, based on git commit 08d1c46, to work around it and provide debug information.
• 11 March 2012 - The border was expanded the third time adding vast area of ocean in north-east part.
• 16-17 March 2012 -  707hero12 and  Zen_Fighter host the St Patrick's Day Party.
• 17 March 2012 -  Drathus42,  captbunzo and  FlyingJellyfish are promoted to Admin status. Contrary to rumour this was not the result of excessive Saint Patrick's Day drinking on the part of  SlowRiot.

April

• 13 April 2012 - On the occasion of his birthday, a statue of  SlowRiot replaced that of  Flippeh for the day, complete with a pimpin hat by  Palindrome7. Rumour has it he was seen doing a rather Flemmish dance!
• 16 April 2012 - Server's 10,000th ban is  NoobSlayer117 (banned by  gabzwithabz). Nobody notices at the time because the latest update to the ban system broke the counter, which was only fixed on 27 April.

May

• 8 May 2012 - Three new warps created: Autumnwood, Newlands and NovumCulta.
• 10 May 2012 - Review of all warps resulted in about half of them being decommissioned.
• 28 May 2012 - The first issue of the Voice of Freedonia newspaper is published at http://www.VoiceOfFreedonia.com

June

• 11 June 2012 - The MinecraftOnline subreddit is created at http://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftonline/
• 18 June 2012 -  winx51,  techkid6,  DiagnosticDog and  mobster_ie are all promoted to Moderator.  Rayzion resigns from his position as Moderator.
• 25 June 2012 - Server's 11,000th ban is given to  ludenduden by Admin  Machines_Are_Us.

July

• 4 July 2012 -  Rizual,  HeavyWeaponsOrk,  BadSyntax,  Charlesbaechler and  ModernMyth7 are all demoted to regular players due to inactivity, following a staff review two weeks previously.  Acsidol is demoted to a regular player due to poor overall Moderator performance and overstepping Moderator authority in making a bullying ban.
• 6 July 2012 - The second issue of the Voice of Freedonia newspaper is published at http://www.VoiceOfFreedonia.com
• 17 July 2012 -  Simmuel is promoted to Moderator.
• 27 July 2012 -  captbunzo is demoted to regular player. Admins  Drathus42,  Machines_Are_Us,  shypixel and  Krenath resign, citing various reasons.
• 28 July 2012 -  gabzwithabz resigns from his position as Moderator.
• 29 July 2012 - MinecraftOnline Radio officially associates with Arecibo Radio to fill dead air, becoming a 24/7 radio station.
• 30 July 2012 -  AndreyDio resigns from his position as Moderator.

August

• 4 August 2012 - Freedonia's second birthday! Celebrations are had with cake covering spawn, fun and games, and all players getting /jumpto for the day.
• 13 August 2012 -  winx51 resigns from her position as Moderator.
• 15 August 2012 -  MattyQ and  Liastrae are promoted to Moderator.
• 16 August 2012 -  winx51 returns to her staff position as Moderator.

September

• 30 September 2012 - The crash bug in Canary is finally solved and server updates to 1.3.2 after an unusually long wait. Freedonia got expansion in north-west direction.
• 30 September 2012 -  Rufas is promoted to Moderator.

October

• 02 October 2012 - The map is expanded to the north-west. Shortly after the expansion,  SlowRiot discovers Freedonia's first desert temple in the newly generated area.
• 18 October 2012 - The server's 12,000th ban is given to  Hanzzer for grief and spam, by  techkid6.
• 25 October 2012 - The Pretty Scary Update is released! (1.4.2) Server kept back awaiting Canary update

November

• 3 November 2012 - Nominations open for the First Annual Freedonia Sham Elections, and the position of mayor!
• 6 November 2012 - Voting begins for the First Annual Freedonia Sham Elections, and nominations close.
• 8 November 2012 - The server updates to 1.4.2, after Canary releases its update [Crow 5.3.11]
• 16 November 2012 - 5000 player's homes were set in Freedonia.
• 17 November 2012 - Voting closes for the Freedonia Sham Elections, and vote counting begins.
• 25 November 2012 - The server updates to 1.4.5, after Canary releases its update [Crow 5.4.11]
• 29 November 2012 -  fmxstick,  Lothendal,  MattyQ,  nosefish,  Palindrome7,  rtkwe,  The_Jackal_249 are all promoted to Admin.

December

• 11 December 2012 -  jonathanpanda,  skybirdthing,  wtfrenchtoast41 and  xArches are all promoted to Moderator.
• 21 December 2012 - The Apocalypse

2013

January

• 2 January 2013 - Server updates to 1.4.6.
• 8 January 2013 - Former backup server hemingway decommissioned.
• 12 January 2013 - Main server migrated from roppongi to renegade.
• 15 January 2013 -  14mRh4X0r, active developer of Canary, is promoted to Moderator.
• 22 January 2013 -  Liastrae resigns from Moderator position.
• 23 January 2013 - Test server migrated from pururin to obrussa.

February

• 1 February 2013 - Server updated to 1.4.7.
• 9 February 2013 -  zfleming1 returns after being MIA under mysterious circumstances. Claims she was abducted by aliens.
• 15 February 2013 - Server's 13,000th ban is  skatertim2000, for wool and glowstone grief. Banned by  mobster_ie.
• 20 February 2013 - It is now possible to collect Player Heads in PvP.

March

• 10 March 2013 - Server reaches 50,000 unique player count!
• 15 March 2013 -  AgentMuu steps down as Admin.
• 18 March 2013 - The server updates to Minecraft 1.5, only five days after the release by Mojang.
• 30 March 2013 - Server updates to 1.5.1.
• 30 March 2013 - Server's 14,000th ban is  MetricRICHARD, banned by  gardy64 for breaking a beacon at Spawn.

April

• 13 April 2013 - Server owner  SlowRiot celebrates his birthday on the server. Everyone at spawn suddenly get super jumping powers, causing massive injury and death to the participants. Superpowers are overrated.
• 13 April 2013 - Users  TEllins,  thesprazzzler (on his birthday!),  TheDarkrai85,  crystalriver and  Excalibur_NUMNUM are promoted to Moderator. As  thesprazzzler and  crystalriver are siblings, this makes the first ever brother/sister promotion.
• 24 April 2013 - Moderators  14mRh4X0r and  dorn284 are promoted to Admin.
• 25 April 2013 - Freedonia's border gets expanded by 4 km to the north-west mainly. The old Nether is archived and the Nether is re-initialised to allow harvesting of quartz.

May

• 23 May 2013 - Users  bhugoz and  tindwcel are promoted to Moderator.
• 30 May 2013 -  Violet_Apathy is promoted to Moderator.

June

• 25 June 2013 - Server's 15,000th ban is  MrStarch123, banned by  SlowRiot as a confirmed alt of the infamous  AlphaAlex115.

July

• 1 July 2013 - Minecraft 1.6.1 released. Server kept back awaiting Canary update.
• 5 July 2013 - Minecraft 1.6.2 released. Server remains on 1.5.2 awaiting Canary update.

August

• 11 August 2013 - After a lengthy wait, server updates to 1.6.2.

October

• 4 October 2013 - Server updated to 1.6.4.
• 19 October 2013 -  stromhurst is promoted to Admin, and  PassiveFriendly is promoted to Moderator.

December

• 3 December 2013 -  SnappyMuppetman is promoted to Moderator via impromptu IRC interruption by  SlowRiot.

2014

January

• 3 January 2014 -  TheMightyCheeze,  bubba_basti and  Simmuel resign from their Moderator positions.

February

• 13 February 2014 -  Kayla93 is promoted to Moderator in the middle of some IRC chatter by  SlowRiot
• 22 February 2014 -  theschlozmeister is promoted to Moderator by  SlowRiot in IRC.

April

• 3 April 2014 -  imaMIN0R and  samoroth are demoted due to extended absence.

May

• 5 May 2014 - As a result of  Blobehh's abject boredom,  de2354 and  Anna_28 are promoted to Moderator and  werdnaz is promoted to Admin.
• 30 May 2014 - After offering to help  SlowRiot manage the IRC bot,  TheDarkrai85 is promoted to Admin.

June

• 18 June 2014 -  techkid6 is promoted to Admin on his staff anniversary.
• 26 June 2014 -  Menmeth is promoted to Moderator while being afk.

July

• 14 July 2014 -  fthtjyjy is promoted to Moderator.
• 28 July 2014 -  twinchicken86 is promoted to Moderator.

September

• 5 September 2014 - Staff clean out!  TBSliver,  Quizlibet,  GodlyCheeze,  Bigred999,  gardy64,  TheSuicideBooth and  skybirdthing are all demoted to regular players due to inactivity.  Pieapple42 was promoted to Moderator and  Kiatarie returns to her staff position.
• 6 September 2014 -  supertec is promoted after some IRC chat with slowriot and took him several minutes to realize it had even happened.
• 9 September 2014 -  jimmyd93 is promoted to Moderator (for the second time) during some IRC chat.
• 13 September 2014 -  bubba_basti returns to his staff position.
• 16 September 2014 -  ardoom1 is promoted to Moderator.

October

• 3 October 2014 -  crystalriver is demoted due to inactivity.
• 18 October 2014 - 16,000 ban was  hopesfall23 for ban evasion. Banned by  xArches.
• 18 October 2014 - Server updated to 1.7.10 after a very long wait. MCO would not recieve anymore updates until 3 April 2021, or over 6 years later.
• 18 October 2014 - Server migrated from Renegade to Ruthless.
• 25 October 2014 - South expansion with 4,5 km radius appears on the south edge of Freedonia.

November

• ? November 2014 - South expansion bubble becomes even bigger, covering all south part of old border.
• 22 November 2014 -  Menmeth resigns due to server concerns.

December

• 25 December 2014 -  SpeedSter is promoted to Moderator on Christmas day.

2015

January

• 7 January 2015 -  Waterboy0048 is promoted to Moderator.
• 9 January 2015 -  TEllins resigns from her Moderator position.
• 21 January 2015 -  SnappyMuppetman is promoted from Moderator to Admin.

• 4 July 2021 - MinecraftOnline shifts to a temporary Minecraft 1.16.5 server to let players explore and enjoy Holidonia for a much-needed Staff holiday, with a temporarily much-reduced set of rules. This also makes it much easier for the Staff Team to relax, and to perform maintenance on Republic's systems which is difficult to perform while the main server is running on Freedonia.
• 4 July 2021 -  sm0ney5 is the first ever player to join Holidonia.
• 21 July 2021  LordOfTheShadows makes the 40,000th ban, decimating  Clo_gang in the process.

• 4 August 2021 - MinecraftOnline turns 11 years old! The /store command is introduced. Hourly gifts give special birthday items and the /spawn command creates fireworks while giving useful potion effects or cake.
